Here’s an announcement I missed announcing Microsoft’s sponsorship of RoboCup 2007 and news that there will be a demonstration of new 4-legged league candidate robots in Atlanta.
Microsoft’s foray into this RoboCup is to show off their software package Robotics Studio. I haven’t read much about it but it sounds interesting. Also, Bill Gates has made some posturing talk towards robotics interest for Microsoft. Of course, Microsoft has sponsored Dortmund University’s team for many years and we saw lots of Microsoft representation and people at RoboCup 2006 in Germany.
As for the new 4-legged league announcement, it says that the “winning robot hardware platforms” will be showed off. Here’s hoping that the interest from robotics companies is high and the field (beyond of course the inevitably kick-ass NUBot platform) is formidable.
We should get Logo Stickers for the dogs if for no other reason except that they look ridiculously cool. This example is not the greatest (the rUNSWift and the GermanTeam had wayy cooler ones).
So here’s the question, how the heck do we get these made, and what should we put on them?
I’m thinking either the traditional ‘Bowdoin’ font-ed name, or the nBites logo minus the text, or even the Bowdoin sun seal. And remember, if anyone out there wants to pay us an extravagant sum to get their logo on our aibos, feel free to contact us.
UPDATE:: Oh, and here is the official regulations concerning these ads:
Teams may add a black and white logo to the upper part of the leg. This logo must be at least 50% white by area.
It doesn’t contain any specific information about the unix environment, but instead just gives comforting words to those — like me — trying to get more out of it.
Nice Quote:
Unix as acquired a reputation as something that can only be used by people who learned 14 programming languages by the age of ten and build all their home machines from scratch because it’s fun. This is not true. If it did my artsy-fartsy background would have prevented me from ever touching the keyboard. There are two basic premises that would’ve saved me a lot of angst in learning Unix. First, it does not make sense. Period. None.
Yo nBiters–linked to our Basecamp site on the right. Those who I just invited tonight: start using it. I think it’ll be a good way to stay in touch over break and keep brainstorming. If you don’t want to use the ‘to-do’ lists, that’s fine. But at least check in and check the messages.
Eight of the fearsome robotics dudes from Bowdoin College went to the mid-coast Maine famous China Rose buffet restaurant today–and man did we eat some food. Me, Chown-Dawg, Joho, Mark, Tucker, Jeremy, George, and newbie Seth came along.
Don’t forget, team, that we have a meeting on Thursday at 4pm in the Lab to strategize for work to be done over winter break.
Added the remaining two teams that make up the GermanTeam, the Bremen Byters and the Darmstadt Dribbling Dackels (I hope you can read German) to the Team Links bar.
